ETHICAL PRINCIPLES TO BE OBSERVED

While it would be impossible to list all the ethical principles for teachers to observe, it is felt that a listing of some of some of the major ones might be of value to the teacher. The following which are concerned with the teacher in his relations with pupils, other teachers, administrators, parents, the profession itself, and members of the community are only exemplary.

Ethical Principles Involved in Teacher-Administrator Relationships.

In working with school administrators, ethical teachers should;

1. Try to understand the philosophy and the unique problems of the school administrators, particularly those of the principal in the same school.

2. Transact their school business only with the school officials through established channels. proper

3. Exercise their right and responsibility to use their initiative and ideas in the planning of the school program, but when a course of action is decided upon they should cooperate in carrying it out.

4. Express grievances or complaints openly and frankly with their administrative officers.

5. Expect to obtain positions and to make progress professionally upon the basis of their qualifications and service without the use of undue influence, bargaining, or other unethical means.

6. Be loyal to the administrator when he is being criticized or accused and refuse to listen to false statements concerning his actions.

Ethical Principles Involved in Teacher-Teacher Relationships.

In working with other teachers, ethical teachers uld:

1. Not interfere with others in the conducting of classes or the disciplining of students.

2. Exchange ideas and instructional materials with others if such will help improve any part of the school program.Avoid gossiping with others and always speak well of each other, especially when some one is doing the opposite.

4. Not underbid another for a position or mark of favor or recognition.

5. Defend the reputation of another teacher who is being falsely accused.

Ethical principles involved in teacher-pupil elationships.

In working with their pupils, ethical teachershould:

1. Keep the welfare and educational progress of their students always uppermost in their minds.2. Consider honesty and fairness with students at all times as major objectives.3. Recognize and treat students as individuals with different backgrounds, different abilities, and different interests.4. Treat as confidential all personal information about students which comes to their attention, particularly that which the students have given them in confidence.5. Refuse to accept pay for tutoring their own students, but render assistance to all who need it insofar as is practical.

6.Use discretion in accepting gifts from students;

refrain from utilizing student services to the point of exploitation.

7. Not use their offices or classrooms to "Parade" their biases or to indoctrinate students with their personal opinions about politics, religion, or in other areas of controversy.

8. Refuse to listen or to allow students to talk disparagingly about other teachers.

9. Be friendly and approachable.
